Ghost 3.0: Memberships, Subscriptions, and the JAMstack Pivot
Ghost 3.0 (October 2019) embedded memberships, Stripe subscriptions, and headless JAMstack workflows—turning Ghost into subscription infrastructure for independent publishers.

On 22 October 2019, Ghost 3.0 combined two big bets: native membership billing and a stronger headless CMS story for JAMstack front ends.
Recurring revenue in core
Rather than bolting third-party paywall tools onto a blog, Ghost wired members, tiers, and Stripe into the product. Publishers could sell subscription access while retaining audience data—a response to ad-tech churn and platform lock-in.

API-first publishing
Expanded Content and Admin APIs plus webhooks made Ghost a credible backend for Gatsby, Next.js, and static generators. GitHub Actions recipes also enabled push-to-deploy theme workflows without manual ZIP uploads.
Legacy API retirement
Ghost 3.0 removed aging v0.1 Public API endpoints and the Apps framework, pushing integrators toward documented Core APIs. Theme authors should validate with GScan and update client-side search helpers where needed.
