Ghost 2.0: Custom Routes, Multilingual Sites, and the Rich Editor

Ghost 2.0 (August 2018) replaced the single blog feed model with MobileDoc editing, YAML routing, content collections, and multilingual URL structures.

Ghost 2.0: Custom Routes, Multilingual Sites, and the Rich Editor

Released 21 August 2018, Ghost 2.0 stopped treating every site like a single reverse-chronological blog. Block-based editing, flexible routing, and multilingual URLs opened the door to magazines, marketing sites, and newsrooms on one stack.

Structured writing by default

Markdown remained available, but the primary editor stored posts as MobileDoc JSON—structured documents that could render to HTML, RSS, AMP, or custom outputs. That decision foreshadowed today’s Lexical-based editor.

Routes and collections

YAML-driven routes.yaml enabled curated homepages, standalone landing pages, and tag- or author-specific templates without forking core—ideal for publications that outgrew a lone post stream.

Multilingual URLs

Translated content could live on dedicated URL patterns with SEO-friendly templates, helping publishers compete in regional search without running separate installs.
